MyRegistry contributing writer Savannah Walsh is a Canadian blogger, a mom of five little ones, and the face behind That Caffeinated Mom, where she talks pregnancy, birth, and everyday mom life in her own relatable and very candid storytelling style.

As a still-growing family of seven, we have a ton of stuff… and that’s exactly what it is—stuff. I can’t even find a better word to describe what it all is, because there’s too much of it… everywhere. Shoved in drawers, cluttering my counter, and don’t get me started on the closets. *shiver* I started to find that all the stuff was becoming incredibly overwhelming. No matter what I did or how often I cleaned, I could never keep up. It was always just cluttered! I finally had enough and decided I needed to make changes in our lives and around our house. And that journey took me deep down a rabbit hole.

I started assessing our clutter more closely: what it was, where we got it, what it was made from, when was the last time we used it—had we ever even used it? I quickly discovered that a lot of our clutter was gifts that had been given to us. Generous thoughts and kind gestures that someone had purchased for myself or my partner or our children. From scarves to candles, sweaters to books, all of it ended up as unused clutter around our house. And the kids’ stuff was even worse! So much plastic and battery-powered toys that were never touched!

But “it’s the thought that counts,” right? While I started the process of donating and throwing out a lot of clutter, I couldn’t help but think there had to be a better way of doing things. Couldn’t it be “it’s the thought that counts” but the thought is things we would actually want and use? Things the kids want to play with? Actual items that would be loved by the people receiving them and not just by Value Village?

All this is never more true than at the holidays, when the house becomes filled with even more toys and gifts. I think you know what I mean...

So what if there was a way for us all to simply make electronic Wish Lists for ourselves and everyone in our family? A list we could easily send to Uncle Bob, who knows pretty much nothing about our kids. A list Aunt Carol could shop directly from, instead of giving me another one of her favorite multicolored glass bowls that we’ve thrown out every year (true story, guys—I’m sure there’s a raccoon living happily in a landfill, curled up in one of my bowls). A list where I can put all the things I hope my husband will magically remember from my million and one hints throughout the year (you’d think he’d take note, but eight years later we still argue about it on Boxing Day).

“There’s gotta be a better way!”

“And there is, Kevin!”

Enter MyRegistry.com.

Truthfully, MyRegistry is a game changer for a thousand reasons, and this is definitely one of the top ones. We already know MyRegistry is the best place to create a baby registry where you can add products from any site and gather them all together in one place. But you can also transition from your baby registry by adding a Baby’s First Christmas Wish List to your account. Then just go ahead and create custom Holiday Wish Lists for yourself and everyone else in your family to easily share with anyone who asks. I don’t need to tell you, with kids, this is HUGE.

When we started to declutter and try to be more minimalist (I say more minimalist because trust me, guys, we’re still far from minimalist), we also tried to be a lot more mindful of what we wanted in our house, taking into consideration things like:

What is the quality of this item?
Where was it made?
Was it produced ethically?
Was it made from sustainable materials?
Is it a short-term-use item?
Is it multi-purpose?

These are things that have become really important to me when bringing items into my home. As a bigger, still-growing family, I feel we have a responsibility to ensure we’re being as decent to the environment and our world as we can be, and a good way to start that is by really checking the things we have in our home.

If it’s something that isn’t necessarily made from sustainable materials, I want to be sure it’s really good quality and won't have to be purchased multiple times. I try to choose items that are multi-use and not going to go out of style or “off trend” quickly. Putting all these items on our personalized registries takes the worry of purchasing the wrong thing off the gift giver and gives me peace of mind knowing I’ve already essentially “approved” the item to come into my home.

With Christmas around the corner, you bet we’re making Wish Lists for each of us. Especially with Christmas looking so different this year in regard to family gatherings, we’ll be sure our Wish Lists are up to date so our families can easily purchase gifts to be sent directly to our door.

Let me show you some of the items on our personal registries this year!

About the Writer
Canadian blogger Savannah Walsh is the mom of five little ones and the face behind That Caffeinated Mom, where she talks pregnancy, birth, postpartum struggles, and everyday mom life in her own relatable and very candid storytelling style. Savannah has created a space for moms from all walks of life to connect over motherhood by telling the real-life story of a regular mom, including the tough parts of motherhood we sometimes shy away from. When Savannah had her first baby, she knew very little about the mom world and quickly felt overwhelmed by the number of options available to her, from baby brands to parenting advice. Over the years, she’s tried just about every baby and kid product there is, along with developing her own parenting style and devising ways to stay sane while balancing a busy household. Savannah joins us every month on MyRegistry to share her stories, mom tips, and favorite baby products.
