I think this is what it is called.  My sister is white and she is marring a black man.  He said that he would like the stepping over the broom as part of the reception.  Does anyone know what this exactly is?  My BIL to be said the bride and groom just step over a broom.  Isn't there some significance that goes with this?

Stepping over the broom or Jumping over the broom.

This is a tradition that is rooted in the AFRICAN-AMERICAN culture...when the slaves were not allowed to hold a marriage ceremony. They would jump over a broom in front of a crowd to signify the validity of their marriage.

That tradition died down during the abolition of slavery....but I have noticed that there has been a resurgence of this among the said community.

I think, regardless if it's not a tradition anymore or outdated, you should still do it if it'll make your husband happy and won't compromise your beliefs or anything.

Jumping of the broom does symbolize the couple jumping into their new lives together and it did originate in the slavery days. Couples are bringing this tradition back, which is why my FH and I will be Jumping the Broom as well. Good Luck to your Sister and her FH.
