We have all been to those weddings where the bridesmaids' dresses work well with the color scheme or theme, but are useless otherwise.  In fact, many of the gowns are simply hideous.

I suggest giving each attendant a swatch and letting them choose an approprioate dress of the same color family.  This allows each attendant to pick a dress or gown they are likely to wear for other occasions and is figure flattering.

This is exactly what I plan on doing. We are still in the planning stages but I have already informed my bridesmaids that They can pick their own dresses based on the color scheme (swatch will be provided). We have also decided to all go shopping together so I can see them first hand and be sure it is what I want since it is going to be my wedding (which I thought was nice of them to suggest).

Well some wedding bridal dress shops offer collections of bridesmaids dresses. For my bridesmaids I chose a specific collection and the color, so they just choose the type of dress they want on their own as long as it is one in the collection.

The color swatch idea is good but I think it would take more time out my life going and seeing each dress each girl picks from each store. I rather just pick a group and leave the rest to them. That way I will not be too surprised or have to tell them that a dress they picked is not appropriate or that I don't like it (awkward! Frown

I chose this group and just gave them the color I selected (Turquoise):

When my neice got married, she had bridesmaids from different areas of the US. She told all of them to find a hunter green dress. The lenght didn't matter to her.  They all had different styles and lengths, but they looked really nice.  It was a great idea because they all picked their styles and had a dress they could wear again.

In one of the weddings I attended, the bride had the bridesmaids wear strapless tea-length dresses in different jewel colors that coordinated the beautiful shawls that she brought home from Singapore. Those shawls served as gift and the motif of the whole wedding.

The dresses were in satin. After the wedding, some had theirs shortened and thus made their dresses multi-functional.
